The Student Leadership Institute at Cornell
(SLIC) was first held in September 2001. SLIC is designed to provide student
officers from registered organizations with the opportunity to explore
topics relevant to their roles as student leaders. The Institute features
a Keynote Speaker and workshops on topics such as member recruitment,
comprehensive event management, activism on campus, group goal setting,
effective meeting management, contract negotiation, team building, programming
for a diverse campus and more.
The SLIC logo to the left is used each year. It is symbolic in that the
sun represents the student leaders who graduate from Cornell University.
The eight (8) beams of light represent the students who graduate from
Cornell's seven
(7) undergraduate colleges/schools, and the graduate/professional
schools. The fact that the beams stretch beyond the border represents
how our students influence all parts of the world. |
| The first annual Student Leadership Institute
was held on September 8, 2001 in Willard Straight Hall. Brian McAree, Vice
President for Student Affairs and Campus Life at Ithaca College provided
the keynote address. The institute's theme was based on the reality show
Survivor, and included workshops on leadership
styles, group dynamics, working with agents, negotiating contracts, working
with volunteers, and what it means to be a good leader, to name a few. Lunch
included roundtable discussions on various topics, and attendees participated
in an action lab where leaders discussed and presented case studies. The
day concluded with a bbq dinner where advisors were invited to join student
leaders. |

as student leaders, and how they use the skills they developed in their
current jobs. Advisors also participated in a panel to discuss expectations,
roles and responsibilities. |
